One word resolution
April 24, 2009 – 10:12 amEvery year, people make all kinds of resolutions. Gym membership signups skyrocket in January and by this time of year, they are ghost towns.
I think resolutions fail because they are too confining. Too defined, and easy to quit on.
But here is what I think WILL work for you:
Choose ONE WORD that will define you for the next year.
That’s it. A single word.
The power in this strategy is that unlike most resolutions, it can actually permeate your life. A commitment to a single quality can effect every decision you make. And, it’s much more difficult to give up on. After all….how hard can it be to live up to one word?
So, here’s an example of the classic…..I think you’ll see what I’m getting at.
Replace “go to the gym everyday” with “FIT”.
“Fit” is something you can do many times every day. Choose the salad instead of the burger. Park further from the building. And yes….go to the gym. But it’s that momentum of successes that makes it much more likely to stick for the whole year. Allow “Fit” to be a goal in every decision/behavior of the year.
The word can be anything that you want yourself to be.
Focus
Compassionate
Thrifty
Humble
Fun
Organized
Relax
And on and on.
You know what would make you a better man this year. It’s ONE WORD. Pick it and commit yourself to it.
I’ll post mine next week.
