One word resolution

April 24, 2009 – 10:12 am

Every year, people make all kinds of resolutions.  Gym membership signups skyrocket in January and by this time of year, they are ghost towns.

I think resolutions fail because they are too confining.  Too defined, and easy to quit on.

But here is what I think WILL work for you:

Choose ONE WORD that will define you for the next year.

That’s it.  A single word.

The power in this strategy is that unlike most resolutions, it can actually permeate your life.  A commitment to a single quality can effect every decision you make.  And, it’s much more difficult to give up on.  After all….how hard can it be to live up to one word?

So, here’s an example of the classic…..I think you’ll see what I’m getting at.

Replace “go to the gym everyday” with “FIT”.

“Fit” is something you can do many times every day.  Choose the salad instead of the burger.  Park further from the building.  And yes….go to the gym.   But it’s that momentum of successes that makes it much more likely to stick for the whole year.   Allow “Fit” to be a goal in every decision/behavior of the year.

The word can be anything that you want yourself to be.

Focus
Compassionate
Thrifty
Humble
Fun
Organized
Relax

And on and on.

You know what would make you a better man this year.  It’s ONE WORD.  Pick it and commit yourself to it.

I’ll post mine next week.

  • HEAL.
  • Explain pls
  • I've had an illness for a couple of years which was finally diagnosed accurately this past Feb. I am in HEALING mode! Not up to my usual self yet, but the progress over the past few months has been amazing to me. The medication makes it hard to focus, hard to concentrate, hard to get Anything done, but now there is Life in my future. The alternative sucked.

BTW, the 'one word resolution' is a great idea!
  • Awesome!!!
  • I randomly saw the title of a post that was yours like hookers and politicians. One of my friends said I should check you out. I think it would be a great idea to replace everyone in Congress with High Class Call Girls, they know how to make money and won't need to steal ours.

This reminds me of the "How would you define your personal happiness...in one word"....now go achieve it. I think I just came up with the perfect personal logo/symbol you are looking for....if I were clever I would put a picture of it here....but I don't have a clue how to do that. You may already have chosen one....the artist goes by a one word name.....

Jake: Don't tell Lenny, he'll pop you while wearing his cashmere.

    Nope....not "Nails"
  • I've been doing this every year for the last few years - setting "themes" for the year instead of specific goals. E.g., "flexibility", "discipline". In those cases, flexibility meant not just improving physical flexibility but also in my work and willingness to, say, try a different kind of food.

    It works :)
  • Cool!
  • I like this Andy, I would say my word this year, is "consistent." I am guessing that most traders would find that this word describes their trading journey at some level, where ever they are on it.
